Printable Pet Emergency Handbook: How to Set It Up — and Actually Use It
We make a small planner called the Pet Emergency Handbook under our printables brand, PawPlanner Printables (it's $4.99). This page is a straight setup guide — what to write in it, where to keep it, and the situations where it actually earns its spot on the fridge. No fluff, no "I tested 30 planners" story. Just the practical part.
What the handbook is for
It's a one-page-per-section printable that keeps the boring-but-critical stuff in one place: your vet's number, the nearest 24-hour emergency clinic, your pet's microchip ID, vaccine dates, known allergies, and current medications. When something goes wrong at 11pm, you don't want to be scrolling through old texts for the clinic's number.
Step 1 — Print and fill the static info first
Sit down once and fill in everything that never changes: microchip number, vet contact, emergency clinic, vaccine record, allergies. Use a pen, not pencil — you don't want "peanut allergy" smudged into "no allergy" during a panic.
Step 2 — Pick two homes for it
One copy goes on the fridge (everyone in the house sees it). A second copy lives in the car glove box or your pet's travel bag. If you board your dog or leave them with a sitter, a third copy in their overnight kit means the sitter has the numbers too.
Step 3 — Set a 3-month refresh
Vaccines change, meds change, clinics change. Put a reminder in your phone every three months to check the dates. The whole point is that the info is current when you need it — a handbook from 2021 with an old clinic number is worse than nothing.
When it actually gets used
- Emergency clinic visit — you walk in with the allergies and meds already written down.
- Boarding or daycare — hand the sitter the relevant page instead of reciting it from memory.
- Travel — the glove-box copy covers you out of town, where your regular vet is far away.
